Have You Hugged Your CPA Lately?

As I opened the front door to my CPA’s office, the smell of taxes hung in the air. It’s a cross between library and funeral parlor. At least in my mind. My husband swears it doesn’t smell that way.

My CPA, John, greeted me with a smile, as always bright eyed. I drudgingly followed him back to his office dreadinoffice-495808_640g the news of how big the check I get to write is this year.

As we got settled in his office, “I know, you’d rather be getting a root canal right now,” He says with that smile in his eyes.

“Yes,” I replied. “Nothing personal.”

“I promise to make this as painless as possible.”

Ever feel like this when it comes to taxes? Dealing with the reckoning of last year’s business can leave one feeling a bit overwhelmed. Nauseous even. It happens no matter how prepared you are. Over the years I have come to not only feel glimmers of gratitude for my CPA. There have been times I could just hug him.

Five reasons to give your CPA a hug

or at least send them a Thank You card.

After all, how much appreciation do they really get?

  • CPA’s help you keep your business legit with the IRS. Having a CPA, who has maintained good standing with their certification, prepare your taxes aids keeping you and your business lower on the IRS audit radar.
  • yay-619197Deductions! Deductions! Deductions! Did I mention deductions?  Because most CPA’s truly are interested in saving you money, which is good for their business, they are great at noticing where you can take deductions you may not have been aware of. They know what, when, how and where in your business revenue stream to take deductions. They are wonderful at helping you capitalize on those money saving opportunities.
  • Ugh! Tax Code. Every year there’s more. It’s their business to know the most recent diatribe of new tax law that would break the average person’s brain. What’s awesome is that your CPA seems to thrive on this stuff and has a super power of digesting it and applying it to your business. He can also, and here’s the super power part, explain it in terms that make sense in your native tongue. yay-15708220
  • Guidance is key! They are great at showing you your next step of business planning. Because a CPA is able to see the growth of your business in terms of numbers, they know when it’s best for you to change your filing status, allocate revenue, as well as many, other tricks to save you on taxes owed.
  • The future is now! Did you know your CPA can help you plan for the future of  your business? Ask them to help you forecast growth over the next three years. Tell them what your income, business expansion and even some personal financial milestone goals are. It’s inspiring to know how to prepare for specific income goals. By having the knowledge before you get there, your CPA can help set you up for success and shorten the time it takes to reach those new income levels.

Thank You Note My Hand

As I sat there signing yet another year’s business taxes, I realized how grateful I am that I Get To pay taxes.  I Get To work with a professional who helps me grow my business all year long. He gets a thank you card from me because I am grateful and, as he pointed out this year, ‘I hope you included the stamp and thank you card you sent me in your deductions.’ 😉
